We are still seeking an Equitable Resolution from the City of Seattle and Seattle’s Department of Parks & Recreation
A big THANK YOU to the 100+ community members who took the time to support our Bother of BUILD, André Franklin in his continuous battle with the City of Seattle and Seattle’s Department of Parks & Recreation. We wanted to provide you with an update on the status of the situation.
In response to André’s request for a resolution to an ongoing Anti-Black toxic work environment, the City of Seattle chose to remove him from using his skillsets to benefit Black-IPoC communities and placed him into a “6-month Special Assignment”. This assignment has him assigned to go to all 200+ Seattle Parks and Recreation facilities to document: keycard readers, security cameras, door locks, and other access and security systems, and then enter this information into a database. This temporary role is not a permanent solution, does not leverage his skillsets nor helps support the needs of the Black-IPoC community.
As of today, we have had dozens of Black-IPOC community members use their voices in support of André’s situation. Through our previous email campaigns, the City of Seattle has received dozens of emails requesting an equitable resolution to this solution. It is very disappointing and disheartening to see the City of Seattle fail to respond to dozens of emails from Black-IPoC community members as well as not working to be creative to leverage the proven skillsets that Mr. Franklin has, to help further the City of Seattle's own proclaimed mission, values and goals around Race and Social Justice and to create programs and activities that foster joyful, safe and a thriving environment for Black-IPoC communities.
In order to further push for a response, we are asking supporters to participate in sending a second round of emails to Elected officials and leaders in the City of Seattle. To ensure they respond this time we are including a Public Disclosure Request. This request, like the others, is a simple email; however, under the Freedom of Information Act, the City of Seattle mut respond to these requests.
We will keep fighting for change and we hope that we can count on your continued support. Again, thank you for your desire to understand and your support in this fight for change.
